Definitions & Hazards
Asbestos, a naturally occurring fibrous mineral silicate, was used extensively in building products from the early 1900’s to the late 1970’s. Asbestos was primarily used for thermal and acoustical insulation, fireproofing, and decorative purposes. When these materials deteriorate or are disturbed during renovation or demolition process, they may release microscopic fibers into the air where humans may inhale them.
Extensive medical evidence has shown that the inhalation of asbestos can cause asbestosis, lung cancer, pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma, and gastrointestinal cancer. These diseases have a latency period of between ten (10) and forty (40) years and are usually fatal. The risk of disease is directly related to the amount of exposure.
Asbestos has been used extensively in building materials; below are some examples of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) in buildings:
• Fireproofing and building insulation
• Insulation for pipes and boilers
• Roofing shingles and tars
• Plaster and joint compound
• Putties, caulks, paints, and cements
• Floor and ceiling tiles
Regulations
Building owners are responsible for having a DEP-certified asbestos investigator perform an asbestos survey to determine if asbestos-containing material (ACM) will be disturbed during the course of work on their building. If the investigator determines that the building (or portion thereof) affected by the work is free ACM, the ACM present will not be disturbed by the work, or the amount of ACM to be abated constitutes a minor project, they must complete, sign, and seal an Asbestos Assessment Report (ACP-5 Form) and submit it to DEP.
